Rich Dad, Poor Dad

These days I am reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I know it's an old book but at first some of the theories inside still seems work magically in today's highly competitive society. The word financial liberty really interested me in the beginning and forced me to think about how I could run away from the rat race.

But book is book. And the theories inside do not necessarily fit into anyone's life. After finishing 80% of the book and my view on it was no longer the same as I first flipped open it. The book is not very helpful to me in terms of guiding me to financial success.

Now, I think I have developed another attitude to life along my reading-- work smart and live well. I do not need to get rich at all. What I need is a rich life full of love and excitement. And I think I can achieve that without being very financially wealthy. Of course, you CAN too.

What's up to my lazy bone?

Long time no write!

My mind was not strong enough to withstand the everyday laziness, which reduced my blog to a 'ghost town.'

Contrary to my empty blog, I have done a real lot lately - took a trip to UK with a mind full of backpacker spirit, flew to Beijing to visit the Forbidden City, finished wedding photography with my would-be wife Zoe, bought a house with a river view, and of course in happy(not heavy) debt...etc. etc. Feel very sorry I didn't write things down and left my blog empty and pitiful.

In spite of failing to manage only one blog, I'm going to regenerate a blog dedicated to my career. I do cross my fingers at this moment to hope I can keep my words for at least a few months. Let's see.

弯刀 Machete

s2758357.jpg
This is the first time I was on this genre, beheading, limb-cutting, gun-shooting(though our protagonist didn't like gun much)... every single scene in the movie depicts a high level of violence. To tell the truth, I was misled by a movie review website into watching this big daddy slashing his way while fucking every single woman he met throughout the movie. This movie was rated good and ranked high, for some reasons that were completely out of my understanding. Now I think it must have been backed by its loyal fans, who advocate nothing but violence and sex. Another problem for me was that I had trouble in understanding the story line, largely due to my lack of western knowledge. Hope you guy can grab a bit more than me. Enjoy the slashes!

My Take on Asian Game

After a week of free traffic, Guangzhou government has decided to make a U-turn, rescinding the free plan all together. This is a farce that shouldn't happen in a metropolis like Guangzhou. I feel ashamed about living here for more than 20 years. Miscalculation is not unusual in my city. First miscalculating the number of passenger for Line 3 during metro design, so I had to be sandwiched everyday for more than 1 year thanks to a shortened train; and now miscalculating the number of passenger for the entire metro system during a free of charge period, so the Asian Game became a hell to everyone living or working in Guangzhou. WTF, please think before you leap.

Let's keep silent for 3 mins to pray for 360. For 360, this is like a deady atomic bomb. And I do not think it stand a chance. Let's wait for its next move.

Knight and Day - 危情谍战

s4393436.jpg
Damn, finally squeeze time for this movie, praised by some of my colleagues so I think it is worth of a watch for a fan of Tom Cruise like me. But first I have to say sorry for my cracked brain, I get no clue about why the movie is titled Knight and Day. Yes, the knight is no doubt Tom Cruise but who the heck is the Day? Anyone give me a ring plz? I think my taste is higher than my past since I find this flick just moderately exciting. Not too boring for you to sit through for about an hour, to say that more clearly. To sum it up, it is a classic action movie, yes, no more than that. Please watch it with appropriate expectation. Good night!@

盗梦空间 - Inception

s4356687.jpg
Inception must be one of the top-rated movie that I watched recently. The idea is superb! Literally speaking, the movie is about dreaming in the dream of a dream.(even more unbelievably, all dreams are built by human being!) Confusing? That's what I got the first time I watched it. I will definitely review Inception once its DVD version available online. My next target? Takers. Below is an explanation of the plot of Inception through a PC folder system. Enjoy it!

Self Confession

It is 22:37.

I just took a bath. What happened was a thought flashed across my mind like a gloomy ghost. The thought sped through every inch of my vein, burning my blood hot and making me almost unable to breathe. It was a terrible warning sign that something inside me was amiss. The culprit is -- the thought of guilt.

Another weekend is passing with no fruits. It's time to ask myself WHYs. The problem existed long before, but as now it explored, I need to deal with it head-to-head.

I feel guilty, and I think it's the right time to feel it, guilty of wasting time, guilty of staying put, guilty of spending most of my weekend on clicking web game instead of hitting books. Yes, I'm praying for mercy and lenity. It's my penitence. (Damn, I even need to look up the dic for this word, an implication that my pool of vocabulary is dwindling before I become aware of it.)

I look back, and find that I achieved almost nil during the past months.(Yes, I dare to say months) I vowed to give up X-world but failed altogether; I swore to read books every night but never really opened a single book; I made a solemn declaration that I would beef my muscles up but I kept getting skinny. What the heck was wrong with me? A mind with a weak power that could do nothing but 'make childish wishes'? I simply hate that.

I realize that I am now lost and completely in a sea. I let myself into a maze and cannot find a way out. Slack has somehow got into my body and occupied me in full. I got to take some actions before everything is too late.

I just read a book about the success of the CEO of Tencent. It inspired me that perseverance was the key to success. I once had some, but it seems that I am losing it now, real fast. It seems to me that I've stopped dead in my very way to higher achievement. I need to reverse the track that I'm taking.

I deeply know that a single blog piece would never be enough to turn the table. But I think this is a good start to kick up some of my dormient persistence. I know I have some hidden deep down in my heart, waiting for me to dig them up.

I want a car. I don't want to squeeze in metro everyday and elbow off from a packed sardine can. I'm a man with goal. And I don't want to idle around with nothing improved and achieved.

In the upcoming days I will re-start my blog in an enthusiastic way. I will talk about the X-world, from a product manager perspective. I will not indulge myself any into web game anymore. I will look at them more like products than games. I will start to analyze them instead of playing them headlessly.

Come back to yourself Dennis, the once top-of-the-world, knowledge-hungry man.

IT IS THE TIME TO WAKE UP.

Sorry for the long piece, but I really got a lot to talk. And I feel satisfied that my writing skills are still not rusty after all these unproductive months.

Sorry my blog, I didn't mean to make you a wasteland. I just lost my pen, and I have it at hand now, firmly.

Time to sleep. I will wake up tomorrow with a completely different attitude to life.

Cross my fingers, and beat it!

Take a Stand, Make a Change

No more time-consuming/money-consuming web game, that's for kids. No more fooling around with nothing but sex in my head. Be a man like Eminem. Make a change of my life. Beef up my body and add strength to my guitar skills. Let's call these aimless days to an end, an once-and-for-all end!

I'll pull my dick from the dirt and fuck the whole universe.

Zoe's Drawing

This is a drawing from Zoe. I was surprised by her drawing skills. I couldn't help asking her - how many hidden powers did she have?

Posted via email from Dennis & Zoe

A Wave to Wave

The first wave in the title represents a hand movement of raising your hand and moving it from side to side as a way of saying farewell. The second Wave represents a failed product from Google. Do you still remember how much buzz it generated when the Google Wave was announced a year ago? I do. Back then, it was labeled innovative, revolutionary and a brand-new way to communicate online. It must be too revolutionary and goes a bit over. As a web veteran, I thought I had no trouble understand anything new on the internet. But I was proved wrong, by Wave. Google Wave was so confusing to the point that I found I was purely dumb when using it. Well, Google has just made another good decision to dump Wave for good as it didn't meet the satisfactory user adoption level. Fine! I won't feel sad about it. Look at the growing pool of Google's dead products, and I wonder if Tencent has the same problem. We make out  successful products easily but always fail to notice the failed ones that lies all along the way.

The Culture War is On

We are on a culture war! Finally an outbreak was seen on Guangzhou streets. The protest was led mainly by young people and was organized over internet in order to save the dialect in Guangzhou, aka. Cantonese. Though the government tried every effort to contain the spread of this news, photos leaked out at last. I was late because most of the photos have been banned from the Internet. I got few of them and I posted what I got on my blog, which was blocked by GWF for ages.

Let's give a shout! Let's break the wall. Let's breathe the freedom!

Time to Learn Chinese

Well, it's weird to say that I need to learn Chinese. As a native Cantonese, I am not good at speaking, reading and writing Chinese. What a terrible situation I am in!

Got to take an exam next year which Chinese will be one of the subjects taken. So starting from today I should spend some minutes each day to upgrade my Chinese hardware.

Here is what I got today.

蹉跎岁月 = to idle one's time away;
马齿徒增 = to grow old with nothing accomplished;
峥嵘岁月 = eventful years

Well, also learned yesterday from one of my UK colleagues an English word - TTFN, short for ta-ta for now. It is just another way to say goodbye, see ya, or laters.

海扁王(Kick-Ass)

s4145084.jpg
The Chinese version of the movie title beats me like one-thousand times. Lets put aside the confusing movie title and look into the content. The movie is eye-catching and alive with wonderful action scenes. But the problem is it should not be viewed by any underage, unless you want your kid watching an aggressive, or even violent, teenage girl killing bad asses with no mercy showing. The idea behind the movie is that even an ordinary guy can become a hero of some kind, of course with the help of some state-of-the-art weapons and armors. I think overall this movie is cool and I will wait for the sequel, which is said to be released in 2012. Kiss your ass!

Living or Surviving?

Just finished a movie and now sitting back in front of the damned PC (It was damned, but couldn't live without it, that's a sad truth). I started to think about the question - am I living or just surviving? With only a few entertainment around, I didn't have a sports car, a riverside villa, or I simply couldn't do whatever I wanted to do, like traveling worldwide.(I didn't think I was greedy though) Things became impossible to me when they were priced dearly. A line from the movie Kick-Ass, with no power comes no responsibilities, struck me with a start. With no special power injected, am I going to be an ordinary guy throughout my life and all I have to do is to live with it?

No, I want a better life, in which I want to travel around with my family and never need to worry about money issue. I have to admit, now I'm just surviving, and a long way before I can really chill out. Not being content with what you have may make your life painful, but I think I will enjoy the 'painfulness' along my life.

恶作剧之吻(It started with a Kiss)

Well, I really don't know how it gets into Zoe's veins, but Zoe is now entirely enchained by this Taiwan soap opera.(not enchanted by Harry Potter, what a pity!) And what becomes worrying is that this soap opera is now on its second season! Further doubling my worry is that Zoe asked me to buy her a copy so she could view it on a gigantic TV screen with the help of an RGB wire! Anyway, I'm not complaining here as long as it really gets her pleasure and help release her pressure. =)

Now, let's take a look at the lass-killer!

s2767577.jpg

Posted via email from Dennis & Zoe

When Two Become One

The fact is there are two people in the house, but it seems each of them has nothing to do with the other, or to say the least, is being entirely apart from the other. The girl is being occupied by a Taiwan soap opera, while the boy is busy with nothing. The boy now understands why the girl complains him when he is engrossed in reading English books, watching game videos or surfing IT websites. The same mentality is in effect. This moment, to me, is monumental no matter how you slice it. Now I understand the deeper implication of the word "interest." When you are interested in something, the something will take the place of anyone or anything you care. You act like you are blind to other people. You become ignorant, unaware and unconscious. You do nothing but to stare at what you are interested. This happens on both male or female, kid or adult. No human being can escape the magic of interest without being hurt, or hurting others. Yes, I'm sorta irritated now. She must have felt the same way in the past. Yes, that must have been the case. But I do have a puzzle twirling in my head. She knew 100% this could hurt. She definitely knew it as she had explained in plain language to me that this kind of act would put a negative effect on people around me. But even someone who knows the danger inside out is now being converted into a state that lets me feel shuddering, and even devastating. Ironically, somehow, an old saying pops up into my fragile head - do as you would be done by others. We are used to point to others with no hesitation when something bad happens. We don't like to think in other people's shoes. Our self-interest is dominant and insuperable in most of the cases.

I believe, sincerely, that everyone has self-interest, to a certain extent. I myself have. And now the problem is tricky - how can we balance our self-interest so we don't hurt people around? Are we too young to deal with this? Are we too young to talk about self-interest? Even though we know self-interest hurts but still we have no viable way to solve it in a decent approach.

I asked myself why I was irritated but it remained unanswered. I treated people the same way many times before and was still being influenced by this unshakable mentality.

Is there no way out? Hope the answer is no.

What is our weapon to self-interest? This is a question that should be answered at the earliest stage of our lives.

Reading Fun Plus Sudden Confrontation

I'm at the end of the second book of Harry Potter which I find very intriguing and can't wait reading it through. Things go on pretty well these days though last night I had a heated confrontation with Zoe on the topic of values. After the 'bicker" we got into some kind of "cold war" in bed, and of course ended up peacefully at last.

We conflict constantly on a regular basis. Don't know why but seems we can always find a way to engage in fervent confrontation. Maybe, I have to admit, this is real life.

My Kid, This is Writing for You

Hi dear,

I am writing this post specifically for you, my kid. Your dad is 28 years old at the time of writing this and have spent most of his time in the past idling and goofing around. He is very regretful but unfortunately there is no antidote for his remorse in the world he lives and he can perform no magic to return to the past for his debt. He wants to leave you a message here though you might never read it in your whole life. You should cherish your time and take study seriously. You don't need to study madly as "all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" but you have to have a study map throughout life so you don't get lost. You should not idle around as I did when I was a kid. You should not treat PC games as your priorities as I did when I was a school boy. You should not grow up with poor knowledge of Chinese, (even I'm a native Chinese) math, politics, history, chemistry, geography and logic as I did. You should not study extremely hard after school age to regain the lost bits of knowledge as I did, which was largely in vain from my experience. Make good use of your time kid.

I hope I can see you soon.

Dennis,
Your Dad

Perseverance. Do I have it?

Feeling my inabilities to write excellent English is a pain, and seeing the fact the my overall English level is declining is nothing but an ordeal. Something puzzled me these days - even I was in an English working environment and read English as frequently as I possibly could but it was clear to me that my English level was still skydiving downwards, at an indescribable speed. WHAT THE HECK!

I've decided to re-enter academic heaven after years away from college. I don't really know if I can persist since I would have to take quite a few remediation courses before facing the entrance exam. The time is not ideal for further academic study now as I have a 9:30-18:30 job and at the same time I have to take care of a family. Sometimes I feel tired and helpless. But I think even all these combined is not enough to produce an excuse to give up further study, which is consistently a dream of mine.

I have many interests, playing guitar, B-box, drawing, writing blog, reading comics...etc. but I have only one dream - to make myself a successful man. And clearly, the term successful is partly defined in my own dictionary as academically successful. The road ahead is laden with anxiety and pressure. I can foresee it with no doubt. Nonetheless, with fighting spirit, I will remember who I am and what I should achieve and stride forwards with no back-away.

Life is tough? But you can be tougher!

Lost on Journey (Aka 人在囧途)

What will happen on a journey home? Sounds a very simple journey but sometimes that's not the case, especially when you are in China. Lost on Journey tells us a story of 2 guys going home during the Spring Festival. I myself have never tasted spring-festival trip but Zoe tells me that it's even horrible than what the movie depicts. Back to the movie, it's alive with laughable lines and scenes and you will also not disappoint upon the performance of the two actors in the flick. It's not a must-see but you should go for it if you can squeeze time from your busyness.

The Karate Kid(功夫梦)

Jacky Chen is not a kongfu star in this movie and don't expect any classic funny tussles that you used to see in Jacky Chen's movies years ago. Well, I think the movie is a bit dull in terms of story line, and also a bit lengthy indeed. But what makes me feel sick is that the movie depicts, though slightly, an international calf love between two kids! I really think these scenes are not good for teenagers and should be cut from the movie. Also, the movie gives people outside China a feeling that everyone in China knows kongfu. How can't that be when you see even a property manager can perform kongfu in a brilliant way. Overall, this is the worst movie involving Jacky, and I think it is better to see him performing kungfu, instead of teaching a kid kungfu.

The Four Masterpieces of Literature in China

Let's take a look at the English names of the four masterpieces of literature in China.

  • A Dream of Red Mansions - 《红楼梦》
  • Water Margin - 《水浒传》
  • The Three Kingdoms - 《三国演义》

Future X-Cops

Some people like to write down games that they work through, and I like to write down movies that I watch, be it good or bad. Watching movie has been a luxury activity for me, as work has encroached most of my time, and study took up the scarce rest.

I couldn't remember the time when I watched a movie alone, though I did remember the last movie I watched was the non-3d Avatar, which I enjoyed with my darling in a cinema.

Amazed by the Future X-Cops trailer, which shows several heart-stirring scenes of Andy Liu fighting a bunch of half-robot-half-human evildoers, I downloaded it with great expectation. This is the first substandard movie that came right into my eye this year. So much so that I couldn't even finish watching it! What are you doing Andy Liu, shooting a movie like this is like putting stains on your overall movie career. The plastic version of iron man really made me sick and not to say all the cheap special effects throughout the flick.

Two words for this movie - it sucks.

I've started reading English books again after so many years away from anything textual. I feel great about it and the feeling of regaining some of my lost writing power is real and welling up in every inch of my mind. I Want a Mobile Shell

Housing problem has been a big headache for Chinese youth who are in their marriageable age. Many of us dare not think of owning even a hut in China due to the skyrocketing price. But this picture took me by storm and provides us a viable way to kill the haunting problem. How I fancy a mobile villa like this, so I can travel around with a 'shell'. I don't think it's too bad to be a snail-man. Isn't it a good idea to stop building cars and instead rolling out mobile shells like this, a combination of car and house? Food for thought.

About Expo SH, About China

I'm a Chinese, born, raised and educated in China. I planned a September trip to Expo Shanghai early this month in efforts to personally experience the international event that proudly hosted in my motherland, but now I would like to take a second thought. Throughout my life, I was fed with info that my country wanted me to know, and I was not allowed even an ounce of news that was deemed inappropriate by our great censoring departments. We were/are treated as shitizens (shit + citizen) like no others. Yesterday I happened to watch a video showing how the security guards in Expo SH tried to stop reporters from filming the chaotic scene at the China pavilion. Our government don't want the chaos to be aired so it put a heavy hand on controlling the flow of info, which ended up damaging the filming equipments of a group of HK reporters. What a shame on my country. I live in a country where many facts are being covered up, many lies are being told, many news are fabricated.

Maybe it's just a sad truth across the globe -- capitalist rules forever!

Just Another Pandora's Box

Just Another Pandora's Box is a parody film that merrily blends 月光宝盒 and 赤壁 into one big funny material. The last parody film that sneaked into my eyelids was Meet The Spartans, which was 'watchwhile' in terms of its odd characters and plots. High praises surrounding Just Another Pandora's Box on the internet plus some recommendations form my pals was one of the reasons that I chose to get a glimpse of this HK-made comedy. Though didn't hit me hard as I expected it really produced some laughable moments thanks to a number of well-planned whimsical twists. For a parody film lover, it might well be your cup of tea.

Go Lala Go!

The Go Lala Go! bears almost no similarity to its paper predecessor A Story of Lala's Promotion, and even the English name of the film is remarkably different from its origin. Yes, the people involved are mainly from the book, but the whole story line is twisted enough for you to believe that the two have no relation at all. The story is more about love than promotion and is by no means an encourager.

Many people criticized director Jinglei Xu to make the movie a showcase of brands, and mocking that's because the talented actress-turned-director is under dire need of money.

The movie itself does not offer any climax. It goes on quite smoothly and throughout the movie you are entertained by a group of beauties, which is a really good news for male viewers! In summary, this is a movie that should be watched on monitor, not screen.

Google is Omnipotent

I have to say Google is king of information. (you knew that already?) I say that because recently Google helped me a lot in my attempt to sort out a tricky problem - to download videos on ATV website. ATV sets up some barriers on its website so that video url cannot be seen and accessed directly, as a result, you are not able to download the videos using your ordinary download toolkit that works well in other situations. After some intensive Google searches, finally I found a discussion post on a forum which details the ways to detour those man-make barriers. The magical steps work great and now I have in my harddisk a reservoir of English news, which serve as my weapons to re-command the lost linguistic battlefield. Lucky! XD

Where there's a will there's a way. Isn't it? =)

Cat Herding

I bumped into a funny adjective today, cat-herding. After some intensive searches, I found its derivation on Wikitionary. The phrase implies an impossible task, because everyone knows what impossibly individual creatures cats are, and getting them to do anything en masse is not something easily done.

Real life example: "That is about as fun as herding cats!"

Clear?

How to Say 地铁车厢?

In today's daily reading, I came across three words for 地铁车厢, specifically, coach, compartment and accommodation. Also, I learned a new word - alight, which means to get down, as from a vehicle or flight.

Example:

A sparrow alighted on a branch.

The queen alighted from the carriage.

Alight on a happy solution.  (here the word alight means to come by chance)

Expo Shanghai

How I want to attend the Expo Shanghai! Really, I think this is a once-in-a-blue-moon chance to take part in an international event like this. Thirty billions are not spent on nothing. With all those beautifully-crafted venues and showcases, the event will certainly rock the world by its excellence and superiority. As a Chinese, I want to leave a footprint on this historic event and feel the edge of our age at the same time.

What about a June trip to Expo Shanghai?

人活着是为了感受人生,怎样活比活本身更重要。

About Satisfaction

Check out this set of words: dissatisfied, unsatisfied, dissatisfactory, unsatisfactory, dissatisfying and unsatisfying.

Can you tell the difference between them?

Now let's clear them up.

un = not quite, not completely;
dis = not at all, lack of;

...tory = about minimum criteria;
...ing = about the whole satisfaction or lack of it;

Notice that you cannot say about a person using the above-mentioned words ending with ing or tory, and instead you should apply the suffix ed to describe a person.

Sola Aoi's Official Blog

I just can't figure out why a Japanese AV blog has such a big influence on Chinese audience. News about Sola Aoi's Chinese-written blog is everywhere and now she has somehow become an influencer in China. Is it because her words? Or her boobs? No matter what, it must be a well-planned cultural invasion on a once-trampled country.

Here is her blog: http://aoisola.cocolog-nifty.com/si_ch/

I'm in a Local Area Network

Following our country's absurd internet policies, my company has decided to turn workplace into a big local area network. Starting from today, internet access to non-work-related websites will be efficiently cut off, which certainly translates to a serious productivity reduction for an IT company whose revenue hails mainly from internet.

Without internet access, everyone seems to be in a fuss.

And me? I just kick back for a while to see how things unfold in the newly-enforced LAN era.

English Lesson - Price

Well, let's review last night's English lesson.

Our topic today is price.

If you see something is very cheap, a bargain, you say it's a steal.

If something is pricey, expensive, costly, dear, you say the price is steep.

If something is priced extremely high, you say it's a rip-off, or daylight robbery, or price out of the market, or outrageous.

You have remembered all the words with bold typeface, haven't you?

Capitalists, You Should All Be Dead

It's nearing midnight, but my darling is still working in her office as busy as a bee.

It's nearing midnight, but I'm still waiting at the other end of an instant messenger for a message from her telling me she can leave.

I hate overtime! When I say I can accept occasional overtime, I LIE!

Even occasional overtime get on my nerve!

I hate overtime myself, and I hate seeing my loved one overtime for zilch.

I hate capitalist.

You exchange our health for dirty money.

I hope one day.

You all capitalists die in anguish.

This is my curse for you.

I'm not a guy from Google who naively sticks to the outdated motto "don't do evil."

I just want to be evil.

FUCK YOU capitalists!

Don't make me start putting explosives into your ass to 爆你菊!

Chat Up

People asked me days before about how to say "挑逗女孩 or 向女孩说甜言蜜语" in English.

The first expression came to my mind was definitely flirt, a word so familiar to me that my first use of it could date back to school days.

But flirt is not the protagonist today, I'd like to introduce chat up.

No more bullshit and let's get to the example directly: my boyfriend always chats me up.

Clear?

Class over...

My Love With Goal On

If you happen to read this;

This is the voice from my heart;

It may be a bit lengthy;

And represents my true self;

I need your help;

To realize my dream;

I've been dreaming of furthering my study path;

I need your support and coaching;

On my way to reach my goal;

The clock is ticking;

With less and less time left;

I'm panicked;

For I'm not sure;

When I can enter into my long-for academia;

I try to strike a balance between life and study;

Sometimes I may tip towards the study side;

Please don't get angry or frustrated;

Instead;

Please offer me guide;

And show patience;

I'm sure the days will come;

The days that we live

Healthily;

Happily;

And

Wealthily;

Yours;

Dennis.

Eyelid Inflammation

Finally, my stinging eyes are recovering from eyelid inflammation. For me, it was a painful lesson that warmed one of my important assets has gone on a strike against unreasonable overwork. I took this message by heart.

Now, I will just turn off my computer and find my fun in books.

Health should always be in top priority. Amen
