English Words

bet the ranch/farm
to risk everything you have because you are certain of something.

No matter how confident you are in the future, you should never bet the farm on one idea.

TV networks are obviously willing to bet the ranch on special sports events - they paid millions to broadcast the Olympics.

take for a ride
1. to deceive someone.

You really took those people for a ride. They really believed you.

I was taken for a ride on this matter.

2.
to take away and murder a person. (Underworld.)

Mr. Big told Dennis to take Ring for a ride.

benchmark
to measure (a rival's product) according to specified standards in order to compare it with and improve one's own product.

Benchmarking the competition is not the only way to get into an excessively crowded market.
