keep something/someone at bay - to prevent something or someone unpleasant from coming too near you or harming you;

Example:
If we can keep the rabbits at bay, we should have a good crop of vegetables in the garden.

She fought to keep her unhappiness at bay.

2.
something of - to some extent;

Example: Our professor is something of an eccentric.

3.
long since - of the distant or comparatively distant past;

Example: I have long since nursed a strong desire for a girl friend.
